ABSTRACT
In recent years, the idea that “mature” liberal-democratic political regimes are in crisis due to the emergence of authoritarian, populist and nationalist leaders, ideas and movements has occupied a central position in political, journalistic and academic debates. In this article, we will discuss the legal-institutional dimension of the contemporary crisis of Brazilian democracy and its specificities in the face of the global context. In order to do so, we analyze the very concept of crisis of liberal-representative democracy and its application to the contemporary Brazilian and global political context, and then we explore the different explanatory dimensions for the crisis in its correlations with the legal-institutional arrangements.
